There is no place in North America equal to the Ozarks when it comes to having a chance of catching a record breaking Rainbow or Brown trout, a freshwater striper, walleye, carp or largemouth bass on a fly rod.
The fabled tailwaters of the Norfork, Bull shoals, Beaver and Greers Ferry are not a complex and complicated stream as a free flowing stream is. Midges, sowbugs, woolly buggers and soft hackle or two and your good to go.
This past couple of weeks have seen some of the best wade fishing that I have witnessed in quite awhile on the Norfork Tailwaters. Many cuts are being caught, one angler telling me he caught 5 in one morning.
If your familiar with the Norfork, the dock hole has been producing several large browns a couple pushing 30 inches or more and being caught on flies. Of course the tailwaters of the Norfork has a reputation of being a breeding ground of world record breaking trout .
The most productive flies this past couple of weeks has been midges in sizes #16 - 20, carry several types and sizes and be prepared to change every 15 or 20 cast. A 1/100th olive fly jig has been a big producer also. Don't leave home without sowbugs #12 & 14's (sowbugs here get as big as a cockroach), and have always produced well straight out from Ackerman's and in the riffles.
The Bull Shoals Tailwaters also has some bragging rights, for the wader your best bet is a taxi ride from Rim Shoals (the White is still a little high for most). Abe Blumthal will take you down river and pick you up at the appointed time or quicker if necessary because of river rising. It's a great way to get into some of the finest trout water in U.S.A.
As we approach spring break don't forget your young ones. Dry Run Creek is world famous and families fly in from all over the world to give their child a chance to be able to catch a 30 inch or larger brown. The young one must be under 16 to fish Dry Run but it will be remembered just as much as Disney World.
LIFE IS GOOD IN THE OZARKS
